Carbon Fiber Fabric as Building Material

Carbon fiber fabric is a strong fiber that is light in weight and has long strands interwoven together so that it forms a fabric-like structure. This will influence steel in terms of strength, stiffness, and load-bearing capacity. This is also called as graphite fiber. This property makes it the perfect material to use in construction to with stand with high impact load.

Properties of Carbon Fiber as Building Material

The important properties of carbon fiber are:

Ø  It is chemically stable.
Ø  It has good electrical conductivity.
Ø  It has significant resistance to fire.
Ø  It is flexible.
Ø  It is preferable to use in small areas where small movements are critical as it has a lower value of thermal expansion.
Ø  The strength to weight ratio of carbon fiber is very high.
Ø  The thermal conductivity of carbon fiber is high, with a value of 24.
Ø  The tensile strength of carbon fiber is good with an approximate value of 290 kgf/cm2.

Uses of Carbon Fiber Fabric in Construction

Ø  Use of Carbon fiber for Precast Concrete Construction : Carbon fiber is used in outer and inner section of concrete precast wall elements in place of steel mesh reinforcement is used. With the help of carbon fiber total weight can be reduced and get needful chemical protection.

Ø  Carbon Fiber as Reinforcement :Carbon fiber is increasing structural strength externally hence it is used as an external reinforcement for columns so it helps to avoid an extra anchoring works and installation which is very costly and time consuming.

Ø  Carbon Fiber in Bridge Construction : Carbon fiber used in Construction of main load-bearing structures, cables, decks, and supports.
